Arnesby May Fayre 29 May 2005

Village Web Home | May Fayre Index

Another successful May Fayre (our 25th) was held on Monday 29th May. An estimated 5,000 people attended and another record profit - over £11,000 was raised for local amenities and organisations.

From an unpromising, rainy start to the day, by mid-day the crowds started to appear as normal, although it is possible that our food sales were hit by people staying at home for lunch while it was raining before coming to the Fayre. We increased the car park fees for the first time for a number of years to £2 per car, and this prompted some people to park inside the village, on grass verges and in fact, anywhere to avoid paying the £2 fee. During the afternoon disaster was narrowly averted when gridlock threatened the A5199. The entrance to the village from the main road had cars on each side, effectively turning it into a single track. Mark Cass, our car park organiser, bravely stepped in and was on point duty in the middle of the A5199 for over an hour until the illegal parkers had left.

race startThe highlight of the afternoon was the fifth running of the Arnesby five mile Cross country run around Shearsby and Bruntingthorpe. This year 68 adult runners covering the whole range of ability from serious club runners to fun runners to joggers entered the race. The winner was the former junior Tom Bell representing the Owls club who beat Andy Wilkinson of the Harborough club by one second in a time of 29:38, over a minute faster than the 2004 race.

Benni Rossi of the Rugby club was the first lady home in 34:30 and organiser Dave Hogg was the first village runner home in 35:04. Click here for full details
